Motorcycle questions, for primary transportation?0N-COUNT-COLL 2012-07-16 10:36:03
I'm a 19 year old girl, and I'm in university. I live at home still, and I'm considering a motorcycle as a means of transportation to and from school. It's about a 15 minute drive, my family only has a two car garage (with two cars) so with a bike I could park inside. From what I've heard, gas is cheap, insurance is cheap, and the bike itself is a lot less than a car. I'd probably be using city transport or drives from friends/parents on days when it's too bad to drive (snow, ice, freezing rain, etc). I don't really enjoy driving for the hell of it like some people my age (driving around at night with 6 people in the car because you're all bored). So to me, this SEEMS practical. I won't be picking up groceries, picking up guys for dates, etc. I live in Calgary AB, and I honestly don't travel out of the NW. I would never use the bike in extreme weather conditions or huge downtown traffic. I'm a small girl (5"4). Because I don't know much about all this, I'd like the facts. What would be a good starter bike? What are risks I'm not thinking of? Does this idea seem impractical? For the most part, how are bikes/gas priced? I was looking at the 2011 Kawasaki Ninja 250R, it seems nice, but I really know nothing about all this. What gear would I look in to getting? Are there any smaller bikes that have storage for helmets? I'm really just looking for something tiny. Any information would be great! Thank you!

Owning a motorcycle as you're only type of transportation.?1Shasha' HELP ASAP!2012-10-06 11:55:03
How is everyone's experience with just owning a motorcycle for their main source of transportation? I've been thinking about the idea of selling my truck so I could save money on gas/insurance, and yes the insurance is cheaper with a bike already got quoted by my insurance company. My commute to work is only 14miles exactly and school is 19miles, so it's not that great of a distance from my home. I also live in Arizona where you are practically able to ride every single day of the year... Just wanting some input from people that are currently doing this or have done it.
Is having a motorcycle as the only means of transportation realistic?0tryphina2012-10-05 09:45:02
I've been with my boyfriend for 3 1/2 years. He is 23 years old and I have 22 years . Our relationship is long term and committed , but not living together at this time due to finances . MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Recently he has been waiting to get a bike . Currently has a 1991 Mercury Tracer think you will break this winter. From next spring and ( presumably) after his car dies , you want to get just a motorcycle . He argues that the savings (less expensive gas, insurance) will be more important than the safety of a car . He has been an avid cyclist for a few years now , but has never ridden a motorcycle before. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus What do you think ? Does having only a motorcycle is a safe and realistic ?
Is a motorcycle an acceptable form of transportation?1KKamani2012-11-06 02:02:02
My boyfriend wants to get rid of your car to get a motorcycle and that 's all I can afford right now. He lives with me and my family. We have 2 cars we drive . He is not in the insurance therefore have to be in the car while driving , which is not always possible. He has a 5 year old son . He goes to court for custody arrangements with her son for 50 % of the time . If I had to be taken back to court because the mother believes that he has to have a car to transport your child , that the finding of a judge of motorcycles for transportation unacceptable that a child of 5 years ? His defense would be that he can use the cars that the home has , however , are not always there for him and neither is anyone ever ready to go with it. Doing so is driving illegally . If he put his son on the bike, it would be very dangerous for the child . The judge to consider me and my family for NULL vehicle use given that they are unmarried and not in the insurance (which, basically , would be invisible to the judge and the unacceptable source of transportation)? It is being very stubborn about this and think a bike is the only way out but I think I could lose custody of your child if the court heard .
Motorcycle over Small Car for City Transportation?0keven2012-08-28 23:15:05
Ok, right now I have a large truck that I probably won't be able to park in the city when I need it for Co-op next year. Given this, I need to sell it possibly for like 3 grand (8foot bed, extended cab, chevy silverado, 2004, good quality with all bells and whistles, 160k miles, about the right price expected?), and get a small car or motorcycle to commute. So I know a used car and a good bike are SORT OF the same range (6k - 9k), but insurance I haven't looked up yet. Also, I like the IDEA of using a motorcycle, it can fit more places, but I CAN'T STAY DRY? I saw they have a water suit and stuff that you can use which could work, but I need to stay dry because i'm going to be working in a suit and tie most days. What do you think is the best idea for someone who needs to commute, doesn't want to spend a lot, needs to stay dry, and doesn't have a parking space (park on the streets is decent, it's philly). Thank you for your advice ^_^.

Cheap, reliable transportation...Cheap Car or Cheap Motorcycle?0nbvhj2012-07-31 06:32:03
Ok, I haven't looked into it that much so far, so please bear with me and provide as much useful information as you can. My car was recently totaled while sitting in our parking lot by a hit and run driver. I have about $2500 to spend on a point A to point B vehicle. I work at home so it will not be a daily driver, but will be used about 3 days a week. My girlfriend would be riding with me some of the time. I live in the desert so it almost never rains, but does get very hot (100+) in the summer. So, if I wanted cheap, reliable transportation, would a motorcycle be more of less cost effective than a car? I know motorcycles don't have the longevity of a car, but cars in that price range would already have over 100,000 miles. I know motorcycle insurance is more, but I don't know if that cost would be alleviated by spending less on fuel and general maintenance. I would be looking at "cruiser" type bikes, something like a Harley Sportster, but probably a Honda or something.

A few motorcycle questions...?1hates math2012-09-08 09:35:03
Hey, I'm 19 and considering getting a motorcycle for 4 reasons: 1) Cheaper than a car! 2) Excellent MPG! 3) Cheap insurance!!! 4) Fun! Here are my questions: 1) I've seen videos where the motorcycle loses control and starts to wobble very quickly, then the rider crashes. Is it because they're doing tricks or is there something they're doing wrong (minus a poorly executed trick)? 2) When parking, do you actually park in a parking space? Or can you just park on the sidewalk (of, for example, Wal-Mart)? 3) Are the majority of motorcycle accidents due to dangerous driving (such as exceeding speed limits, weaving between lanes, etc)? 4) Is it better to buy a new motorcycle (I am considering a Buell Blast) because you never know how well a person takes care of their bike? 5) Does anyone know any good places to get a good, used, motorcycle in Georgia? :) 6) Are there any tips that any veteran drivers have for me? Thanks for you time!
