My house's foundation is sinking in Downey,CA. Can our Earthquake policy cover it?1Una2012-11-02 11:34:03
We bought a house in Downey CA in 2000 is not knowing that the houses were built about a year landfil back. In 1992, a nearby house sank and the property owner then fought with the city of Downey to repair the foundation. Downey only paid half the cost of repair. This community was built in the 70's. We wondered if our policy that covers earthquake , or the city of Downey is responsible for failing to build in the code? This test is very expensive , as anyone can imagine
Why is the foundation sinking?0Stormy2012-11-04 16:48:58
Here goes: two weeks ago I found a sinkhole in our yard, up against the house, big enough to put a car battery into. Called my house insurance co. who told me to call a contractor for advice. Contractor says there is no water in the hole, but the yard has a slope to it, toward the house. The Basement panelling does have water stains, but one of the walls is an INSIDE wall, so that throws us. The contractor wants $4K to remove the panelling, clean off the mold and put the panelling back up, then bring in a truckload of fill dirt to bank up the permimeter of the house so that the rain will follow a slope away from the house. He will also tear up part of a side patio. Part of the slope is obvious to me, part is not. House insurance will pay none of this, I am on social security. My question: this house has been here 45 years. It was moved here from another location by a previous owner. Is it possible the foundation is still settling, causing this slope toward the house? After 45 years? And why inthe world is the INSIDE wall water stained?

Where can I purchase a stand-alone earthquake insurance policy for a residence in the state of Virginia?0JFer2012-06-26 03:45:02
I had earthquake insurance for several years with a well known company as part of a policy of homeowners . " Unfortunately , recently notified me that is no longer going to cover Virginia residents . Could switch companies , but this is a nuisance and I lose the discounts they have earned in recent years for failing to file a claim . Therefore I would like to find a policy that only covers earthquake damage . Thanks for your help with this matter. it is very appreciated.
