Got in auto collision, do I have to tell the body shop that insurance is paying for repair?

They hit me the other day and the other party admitted fault. The insurance company checked my car and cut me a check on the spot and said I can go anywhere and get it fixed with that money . If repaired for less , I can keep the savings . If you need more money they will pay for it. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus The question is when I am looking for body shops, I have to say that the insurance is paying for it ? Everyone wants to see the check or estimate thereof. I feel like I want to do the repair seems to cost as much as or more than they estimate . MedlinePlus MedlinePlus I want to say I'm paying out of pocket , but it is legal ?
