There is no grace period. If you're short on money until after the tax expires, then you need to make the SORN , park your car off the road and not use the car until it is taxed , otherwise a fine. The DVLA will know it is a computer , and the fine will come in the office after a couple of weeks.

You get 14 days to renew or declare SORN before a fine is generated automatically .

However, if you use your car during these 14 days (or is parked on the street ) can be prosecuted for not displaying a valid tax receipt . The 14 days applies only if the car is kept off the road .
