License plates reflect light back in the car behind so the number plate is unreadable. registration plates in the front are white so they do not reflect light that is coming and it means you do not get blind!

Reflective number plates , black and white in the front and black on yellow in the back , were introduced from January 1973. I can only assume that were introduced so that the faceplate will not reflect the light in the opposite direction of the conductors.

This also helps if a car is parked facing traffic at night , however , technically illegal.
